Sure, you know that we have Software Update Manager (SUM) 2.0 already out for quite a while – in previous times, SUM 1.0 was the only kid on the block.

Note: after my initial explanation (“SUM in the family way”) as a blog post in this SAP Community, we have moved the explanation of SUM versions to the SAP Support Portal page on SUM: https://support.sap.com/en/tools/software-logistics-tools/software-update-manager.html. The blog post will no longer be maintained, and it is outdated, as of today. But the SAP Support Portal page is kept up to date.

Latest news: We have increased the SUM 1 numbering to SUM 1.1 as of now: with Software Logistics Toolset 1.0 SP-stack 35, May 2022. SUM 1.1 SP 00 is the successor of SUM 1.0 SP 28.

We have taken this step to emphasize the end of maintenance for non-EXT kernel by end of 2022. SUM 1.1 is available for EXT/EX2 kernels exclusively. For non-EXT kernel until end of 2022, SUM 1.0 SP 28 remains in phase patch-on-request until non-EXT kernel becomes out of maintenance.

Another aspect is that SUM 1.0 had two name schemas: it was delivered as <SUM10SP28> archive for non-EXT kernel, and as <SUM10HDBSP28> archive for EXT/EX2 kernel. As SUM 1.1 is for EXT/EX2 kernels only, we do not require two name-schemas, and the archive name is simply <SUM11SP0x>.

Yes, we still offer SUM 1.0 SP 26 for old start releases (available on request). SUM 1.1 SP00 (and higher) is only for start releases for BASIS 7.00 and higher.

The matrix when to use SUM 1.1 and when SUM 2.0 is appropriate remains like before.
