This post is part of the blog series that describes how to audit SAP S/4HANA Cloud, public edition.

In our blog series, we explain the steps necessary to perform a proper IT Audit of SAP S/4HANA Cloud, public edition, also highlighting the differences to on-premise appliances. To ensure a common understanding, this blog post introduces SAP S/4HANA Cloud, public edition and provides a comparison to other editions.

SAP S/4HANA Cloud, public edition; is the SaaS-Version of SAP’s next generation ERP system, hosted and operated by SAP. The SAP S/4HANA Cloud, public edition; runs on the SAP HANA in-memory database technology allowing to process significantly higher volumes of data in shorter periods of time not only for transactional but also for the analytical workloads. Access to the SAP S/4HANA Cloud, public edition, system is only possible via the Fiori Launchpad, which was newly introduced as a part of the development of SAP S/4HANA. In a private edition the access can be provided via SAP Fiori as well as via the conventional SAP GUI.

Through regular upgrades as part of mandatory release updates, the SAP S/4HANA Cloud, public edition, solution is continuously enhanced with new technologies and supplementary functionalities. Information on planned and completed changes within the scope of the release updates is provided by SAP and can be viewed and analyzed on various websites per business area.

Compared to other deployment models, SAP S/4HANA Cloud, public edition, is standardized and partly pre-configured, while still offering core ERP and industry-specific functionality. This deployment model results in a shift of responsibilities, especially in those areas pertaining to IT-Audit topics. Details on that shift in responsibilities are explained in the next post of this series.

SAP S/4HANA OnPremise SAP S/4HANA Cloud, public edition SAP S/4HANA Cloud, private edition
  • Similar to SAP S/4HANA Cloud, private edition
  • A license of the software is sold, and the client takes over the operation of the system, which allows maximum control over the ERP system landscape
  • An SAP ERP-solution, where SAP operates both the infrastructure and the operating parts
  • The implementation is a straight-forward and swift process since the system landscape is new with pre-defined content
  • It offers “fastest time to value” thanks to the high standardization of processes and the software
  • SAP takes over the operation of the infrastructure required for the solution, while the client is responsible for the operation of the application itself
  • It offers on top of standardization and scalability the full range of classical S/4HANA functionalities.
  • Clients are able to retain the ERP-investments through the migration of already implemented system landscape
  • The elimination of multi-client landscape provides full data security
